How Does the Program Work?
Etsy's Purchase Protection is designed to give you peace of mind when shopping. It guarantees a full refund for qualifying orders if something goes wrong during the logistics process. You are eligible for this protection if:
- The item never arrived at your address;
- The package arrived damaged;
- The item arrived after the estimated delivery window;
- The product differs significantly from the seller's description or photos (e.g., wrong material, size, or color).
If your issue falls outside these categories (for example, you simply changed your mind), you will need to check the individual seller's shop policies regarding returns and exchanges.
How to Request a Refund
If you qualify for protection, follow this simple process to get your money back:
1. Contact the Seller First
Send a "Help Request" message to the shop owner directly through your order page. According to Etsy, over 90% of issues are resolved at this stage without further action.
2. Ask Etsy to Step In
If the seller does not resolve the issue within 48 hours of your message, and the estimated delivery date has passed, you can escalate the case. Select "Open a Case" to ask Etsy to intervene. Be prepared to provide photos if the item is damaged or not as described.
Once Etsy reviews the case and confirms your eligibility, they will send you a confirmation email and process the refund.
Important Exception: The program does not cover delays caused by events outside the seller's control, such as shipping carrier strikes, severe weather disasters, or postal service disruptions due to civil unrest.
